  • Technical Theater Director (Part-Time)

The Roxbury Latin School seeks to hire a part-time Technical Theater Director for the 2024-2025 academic year, beginning in August 2024. Working in collaboration with the Director of Dramatics and other guest artists, the Technical Director will supervise all major technical elements for our fall play, winter musical, and spring play. Prior experience in a professional or educational theater setting is a plus. We are seeking a candidate who is practiced in their craft, detail-oriented, creative, and resourceful, and who is excited about working at a boys’ school (though many performances are co-ed) and interacting with students of that age group.

Most importantly, the Technical Director is expected to supervise the after-school tech crew, scheduling their meeting times, maintaining rosters of involved students each season, and guiding students in acquiring and growing competencies in their design area(s) of interest. These tech crew meetings should occur between three and five nights per week, depending on the needs of the production; that schedule will be set each season in collaboration with the Director of Dramatics. Tech crew meets for approximately two hours per evening, and those meetings can be scheduled at the discretion of the Technical Director as long as they fall between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Once the schedule is set for a given season, however, it will be the standing weekly meeting schedule.

Other key responsibilities are as follows:

    • Manage and maintain the scene shop, ensuring that the space is clean, that materials are organized and put away after daily use, and that any needed enhancements or improvements are proposed to the Director of Dramatics
    • Support three mainstage theatrical productions a year, supervising the overall design in all major areas (set design and construction, costumes, props, lighting, sound) and working in collaboration with guest artists
    • Serve as lead designer in at least two of the above design areas; three or more is preferred
    • Collaborate with the Director of Dramatics and guest artists to set a positive example for students in the program and ensure a mutually supportive working environment
    • Demonstrate a detail-oriented mindset, a willingness to solve problems proactively, and an understanding of the fact that no production is finished until strike concludes
    • Ensure that elements are ready for integration at the appropriate time, as agreed upon by the Technical Director and Director of Dramatics (typically after six or seven weeks)
    • Occasionally travel outside of tech crew meeting hours to purchase props or pick up furniture, costumes, or microphones
    • Work to ensure that the stage, audience area, and other surrounding spaces (pit, tech booth, wings) are well-maintained
    • Supervise run crew, board operators, and stage management team during productions; be present for the full run of each show to facilitate that effort
    • Work with the Director of Dramatics and Director of Music to imagine the yearly program calendar, season, and the growth of the program over time
